Pacific Coast Amateur preview

Headed by a number of state, provincial and regional golf association champions from throughout the western United States and Canada, a field of 84 of the world's top amateurs will tee it up in the 46th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship, July 24-27 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.

The 72-hole stroke-play event will be contested over the Bandon Dunes and Bandon Trails courses at the famed resort on Oregon's Pacific coast. The four-day event is played without a cut. Spectators are welcome to attend with no admission charge.

Arizona Junior State Championship results

Kolton Lapa, of Mesa, won the Boys State Championship while Saki Iida took home the Girls title. The 2012 Boys and Girls State Junior Golf Championship, featuring 60 boys and 30 girls, was held at Longbow Golf Club, on July 2 & 3, 2012.

Steve Nosler Passing

Please join with us in mourning the passing of Oregon golf’s Steve Nosler.  A long-time Pacific Coast Golf Association Trustee and University of Oregon golf coach Nosler left us on Friday following a brief illness. He was 74.

4 Valley courses give back

Four Valley golf clubs announced the launch of a new program to benefit The First Tee of Phoenix called Tee It Up at 10 For The First Tee. Each of the participating clubs (ASU Karsten Golf Course, Eagle Mountain Golf Club, Longbow Golf Club and Raven Golf Club Phoenix) is setting aside one tee time Monday – Friday, June 11 – August 31 in the 10 o’clock hour available to the public for $100. The entire $100 is then donated to the local Valley chapter: The First Tee of Phoenix.

Superstore hosts junior golf fair in May

The PGA Tour Superstore's Chandler location (corner of Warner Road and Arizona Avenue) will host a junior golf fair Saturday, May 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees include The First Tee, Junior Golf Association of Arizona, LPGA Girls Golf, US Kids Golf, Junior Golf Championships and Golf Academy of America. Uniting Nations Cup 2012

Scottsdale amateur Patrick Gravelin was in the middle of a match in last year’s inaugural Uniting Nations Cup when he suddenly got caught up in his surroundings. Gravelin was representing his country in the Ryder Cup style competition against Mexico, but he was having a hard time focusing on golf.

The second annual Uniting Nations Cup golf tournament is set for May 17 – 20 at Mayan Palace Peninsula de Cortez Course. MountainView-Preserve Mens Golf Association supports First Tee of Tucson

The MountainView-Preserve Mens Golf Association held a First Tee golf event Nov. 6 that included 36 youth - both girls and boys - from The First Tee of Tucson, paired with 36 men and women from MV leagues. Following the event, participants enjoyed a pizza party and a fun putting contest. In further support of The First Tee of Tucson, the M-PMGA made a $1,000 donation to the organization.

Brett Wilson wins JGAA Thunderbird Invitational

Brett Wilson, of Mesa, took the victory at the 18th Annual Thunderbird Invitational with scores of 73-70=143. In the Girls 15-18 Division, Madison Kerley, of Chandler, took top honors with scores of 76-70=146. In the Boys 13-14 Division, Noel Sims won with scores of 78-77=155. Alisa Snyder won the Girls 13-14 Division with scores of 77-86=163. The 36-hole tournament was played March 3-4 at Papago Golf Course and was sponsored by the Thunderbirds.

USGA elects Glen Nager as 62nd president

Glen D. Nager, of Washington, D.C., has been elected to serve a one-year term as the 62nd president of the United States Golf Association (USGA). The election of officers and the 15-member USGA Executive Committee also took place today during the USGA’s Annual Meeting in Houston.

As president, Nager, 53, assumes the leadership of the 300-plus professional staff and nearly 1,200 volunteers of the USGA, which together with The R&A governs the game worldwide.

Smartphone app for WM Phoenix Open

2012 will be the first year that mobile phones are permitted at the Waste Management Phoenix Open (WMPO). While people have been sneaking their cell phones into the tournament for years, the PGA is not only allowing cell phones this year but actually encouraging people to bring them with an official smartphone app sponsored by Kyocera.
