Del Lago Local Rules

Del Lago local rules apply in addition to the USGA. The following additional information is provided to ensure we all play by the same rules during league play:

    • Because our course does not mark all penalty areas, consider the edge of the penalty area to be the mow line. The water level around ponds is NOT the mow line. The ball is in a penalty area when any part of it lies on or touches the ground or anything else inside the edge of the penalty area (USGA rule 17.1a). Most penalty areas at Del Lago are lateral (run along the side of the hole) and are considered RED penalty areas. The ONLY two holes that have YELLOW penalty areas (run across the fairway) are #13 and #18.

    • See USGA Rule (17.1d) for other penalty relief options, such as stroke and distance. If the ball comes to rest in a RED or YELLOW penalty area, a player does not have to take relief but can play the ball as it lies with no stroke penalty (Rule 17.1b). Players may ground their club in a penalty area but NOT in a bunker.

    • DESERT RULE applies. AFTER crossing any portion of the fairway, a player may drop a ball within two club lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the desert with a one stroke penalty. If a player chooses the desert rule, it is not necessary to hit a provisional ball. If the ball is found in the desert, a player has the option to play that ball as it lies with no stroke penalty.

    • PACE OF PLAY is “ready golf”. Keep up with the group directly in front of you.

    • CELL PHONES should be off or silenced during play.

    • CANCELLATION notification should be provided to the Golf Genius Committee members via email. For emergency cancellations on the day of play, call the pro shop (520-647-1100).

Hole #13 and #18 Relief

Hole#13

Hole #13 has a YELLOW penalty area which begins along the mow line around the pond. If the ball comes to rest in the penalty area (whether it drops straight in or hits the ground past the penalty area and bounces or rolls back in), a player may tee up another ball or use the drop zone, both options with the assessment of a one stroke penalty. Or, a player may choose to play the ball from the penalty area, with no stroke penalty.

Hole#18

Hole #18 has the RED penalty area that runs along the left side of the fairway to the start of the land bridge. From the land bridge forward, it is a YELLOW penalty area. If the ball comes to rest in this penalty area (whether it drops straight in or hits the ground past the penalty area and bounces or rolls back in), a player may take back-on-the-line relief by dropping a ball based on a reference line going straight back from the hole (flag) with an assessment of a one stroke penalty. Or, a player may choose to play the ball from the penalty area, with no stroke penalty.

Sprinkler Head and Bunker Crevice Relief

Sprinkler Head Relief. If the ball comes to rest ON a sprinkler head, a player may drop the ball within one club length of the nearest point of relief, no closer to the pin. If the ball comes to rest BEHIND a sprinkler head, a player may either play the ball as it lies with no stroke penalty or drop the ball within one club length of the nearest point of relief with an assessment of a one stroke penalty.

Bunker Crevice Relief. If the ball comes to rest IN a bunker crevice, a player must play the ball as it lies (no free relief). See USGA Rule (16.1c and 19.3b) for other bunker relief options, such as outside the bunker with an assessment of a two-stroke penalty.
