Chris Thomas Claims his first AGA Victory at the 2019 Falcon Amateur
Chris Thomas bested the field with a final round 65 at the 2019 Falcon Amateur to claim his first AGA victory.
After firing a 68 during Friday’s first round at Falcon Dunes Golf Course, Thomas entered the final 18 two shots back of the leader, Michael Lawson. He played consistently well by converting three putts into birdies on the front nine, mixed with a lone bogey.
“I stuck to the game plan I had. I hit my irons off the tees I needed to and putted extremely well,” Thomas said.
The competition was heating up when he joined a three-way tie with four holes left. He responded with three consecutive birdies to vault into the lead. He closed the 36-hole tournament with a nine-under 133 to mark his first AGA win.
“I’ve never had a win. I had been playing well in the last three events-the (Arizona) Mid-Amateur and the (Arizona) Stroke Play. To finally get a win…I put it all together finally,” Thomas said.
Ottawa University Arizona sophomore, Hector Barneche, went low in his final 18, after 5 sequential birdies on his first eight holes. He shot the tournament’s low round, firing a superb seven-under 65. He delivered a tournament total eight-under 134, just one shot shy of the champion.
