In Memoriam: Dr. Edgar R. (Ed) Updegraff: 1922 – 2022

SCOTTSDALE (AGA) — The Arizona Golf Association is saddened to announce the recent death of Dr. Edgar R. (Ed) Updegraff at his home in Saddlebrooke, Ariz. Updegraff was 100 years old.

Inducted into the Arizona Golf Hall of Game in 1969, Updegraff was considered by many to be the greatest amateur golfer in Arizona history. Originally from Boone, Iowa, he moved to Tucson in 1951 and would win 27 consecutive club championships at Tucson Country Club. In 1999, Updegraff received the Bob Jones Award from the USGA, which is considered the USGA’s highest honor. Fellow honorees include Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and Nancy Lopez.

Since 1990, the Arizona Golf Association has bestowed its highest honor, the Updegraff Award, upon those who, “by their actions, exemplify the Spirit of the Game.” The AGA sends its deepest heartfelt condolences to the Updegraff family.
