Michael Martin Birdies 18th to Pull Away Victorious at the Northern Amateur
Michael Martin outshined the competition to run away as the 2019 Northern Amateur Champion at Oakcreek Country Club on Sunday. Carding a two-under par on Friday, Martin headed into the second and final round four shots shy of the leader, Matt Andrews.
“Going into the day I was four back and kind of thought I kind of have a chance of winning, but really didn’t think I could,” Martin stated.
With stiff competition, Martin caught fire early on birding four of his six first holes en route to a front nine 32, the lowest front nine score of the weekend.
“It was four holes and we were all tied up,” said Martin.
Having the solo-lead on the back nine with nine to play, Martin needed consistent play. With a lone bogey on the par-3 7th, the competition stiffened when and Jonathon Walters carded a birdie and Adam Walicki sunk an eagle from off the green on the 12th hole. They both sat one behind the lead. Parring the following five holes, Martin found himself in a tie when Walters birdied the 17th. Martin’s dramatic 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole pulled him away victorious by two shots, ending the tournament at eight-under.
“I was tied on the last. I got a good break. I got a free drop and then hit it to 15 feet to make birdie and win by two.”
This victory marks Martin’s second of the season and second ever with the AGA. Martin’s first victory came with a win at the 2019 Arizona Mid-Amateur Championship this past June.
