2017 U.S. Amateur Championship
Six Amateurs Representing Arizona in 2017 U.S. Amateur Championship
LOS ANGELES – Six Arizona golfers are vying for the chance to raise the coveted Havemeyer Trophy this weekend at the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Mason Andersen (Chandler, Ariz.), Jake Chanen (Phoenix, Ariz.), Kenny Coakley (Phoenix, Ariz.), Prescott Mann (Scottsdale, Ariz.), David Rauer Jr. (Tucson, Ariz.), and John Souza (Phoenix, Ariz.) will all tee off Monday and Tuesday with two rounds of stroke play qualifying at The Riviera Country Club and Bel-Air Country Club, playing one round on each course.
The 36 holes of stroke play will then determine the 64 players who will advance to match play. All match-play rounds will be conducted at Riviera.
By playing in the 117th U.S. Open at Erin Hills as an amateur, Andersen earned automatic exemption into this year’s amateur championship. The other five played in qualifiers around the country to earn their respective spots.
In the local sectional qualifier hosted by Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix, Mann shot an impressive second-day 63 for a two-day total 134, 10-under and the first qualifying spot. Chanen and Souza shared rounds of 67 and 68 for a two-day total 135 and the final two qualifying spots. Rauer Jr. took the only qualifying spot out of the El Paso, Texas sectional and Coakley took the top spot in the Morton, Minn. sectional with two-day totals of 139 and 138, respectively.
