The 90th Arizona Amateur crowned its newest champion on Saturday at Desert Highlands. After 36 holes of stroke play qualifying and 6 matches, the #1 seed found his way to the Championship against one of Desert Highlands own, Michael Martin.
McMahon and Martin wowed spectators with their accurate iron play and touch around the green. McMahon took and early lead on the front side, but it was his chip in for eagle on #9 that set the tone for the second half of the match. Martin was not able to win a hole until the 15th, but that was enough to extend the match and put the pressure on Alex McMahon. On the 240 yard 16th, Martin put his tee shot on the front center of the green, while McMahon sent his hole high and left. Like he had done all week, McMahon’s solid short game left him with a short putt and a victory in the 90th Arizona Amateur.
