2013 Goldwater Cup Matches
The professionals once again retained the Goldwater Cup in both the Open and Senior divisions. The Open division team kept it close with the section boys leading by only one point after the first day. All but a few of the matches on Wednesday were close and many went to the 18th hole to decide the outcome. In the end, the PGA section came through with clutch plays and closed out the amateur team. The final for the singles matches was 7 to 5.
Congratulations to all the players and to the Southwest Section PGA for winning the 2013 Goldwater Cup Matches!
The 2013 Goldwater Cup Matches got under way Monday evening with an opening dinner to introduce the teams and announce the first round pairings for the matches. This year’s matches are returning the Phoenix Country Club, the home of Bob Goldwater and the original Phoenix Open.
There was a lot of nostalgia about Bob Goldwater and how, back in 1961, he brought the pros and the amateurs together at Phoenix Country Club for what became the annual Goldwater Cup. They play a Ryder Cup format – fourball, foursomes and singles matches over a two-day time.
For the past several years, the matches have been held in November or December – however, this year Phoenix Country Club offered to host it in September and also committed to a five year agreement.
There are two divisions for the matches: twelve open division players and twelve senior division players. Representing the AGA are:
