John Davis captured the 2010 San Tan Amateur presented by Aladdin Pool and Tile Cleaning with a final round 7-under par 64. Michael Wog II, 2009 AGA Player of the year, finished one stroke back after carding a 66 on day 2. First round leader Paul Welle finished four strokes back in fifth place after shooting a 1-over par 72.
Playing three groups ahead of the first round leaders, Davis, recorded 8 birdies and 1 bogey in the final round to post a total of 9-under par 133. Michael Wog II made a late charge to catch Davis with birdies on numbers 15 and 16, but a three-putt bogey on the final hole gave Davis the championship. Mitch Chilton and Takuya Fuji posted strong final rounds as well, shooting 67 and 68 respectively, to finish tied for third.
The San Tan Amateur is always a very popular event on the AGA tournament schedule. Annually played Easter weekend at Las Colinas Golf Club, the event attracts top Arizona amateurs and this year was no exception. Over one-third of the field was comprised of plus handicaps, which generated strong competition for participants.
Flight winners: First Flight- Michael Wog, Second flight- Bob Munoz, Third Flight- Jeff Dumas, Fourth Flight- Hans Huber.
The AGA would like to thank Aladdin Pool and Tile Cleaning for their continued support of the event as well as Steve Dallas, General Manager of Las Colinas, and all the volunteers that continue to support Arizona amateur golf.
Round notes: Chad Arcaria holed out for a double eagle 2 on the 532 yard par 5 fifth hole.
