SWSPGA Announces Player of the Year Awards

Don Yrene Wins Fourth Straight Award While Jon Chaffee was Rookie on Senior Circuit

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (October 26, 2006) � Standing on the 18th green at famed Medinah Country Club after the completion of this year�s PGA Championship was a dream come true for Don Yrene. After making the cut in a major golf event, Yrene, the Head Golf Professional at The Golf Club Scottsdale finished as the low club professional and was waiting his turn to receive his award. The delay was because a player by the name of Tiger Woods was due to receive the Wanamaker Trophy, emblematic of winning golf�s final major championship of the year.

�It was kind of surreal. I knew I was standing there, but then again, it was a different kind of feeling,� recalled Yrene. �It was a wonderful accomplishment and I�m extremely proud of the way I played at Medinah. I still can�t believe I was there, but it sure was a lot of fun!�

Meanwhile, Chaffee, Teaching Professional at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale was entering his first season on the SWSPGA senior division. �I knew going in that I should be fairly competitive in most of the events I played in, but there are quite a few talented players on there, namely Larry Mackin and Joe Huber that you have to keep your eyes on,� said Chaffee.

Chaffee won the prestigious Arizona Senior Open under blustery conditions at Trilogy GC at Vistancia and backed that win up with a victory at the SWSPGA Senior Championship at Tonto Verde GC. �Both tournaments were completely different from one another. Both courses were in great shape, but the wind was blowing hard at Vistancia which forced us to play to the front of each green and have the ball work its way up. Keeping the ball on the putting surface was critical,� recalled Chaffee. �Tonto Verde was in fantastic shape, the greens were pure and the playing conditions were ideal so it was a matter of just keeping the ball in play and hitting some key putts.�

Both Yrene and Chaffee were honored recently by the Southwest Section � PGA of America as its Players-of-the-Year for 2006. For Yrene, he took home the honor for the fourth straight year, a first-ever accomplishment in the long rich history of the SWSPGA. �What a great feeling to win Player-of-the-Year for four straight years. I know John Jackson won it three years in a row and he�s one of our Section�s great ambassadors of the game so to be in his company is a great honor,� said Yrene. Bob Phillips won Player-of-the-Year six years (1976, �77, �83, �84, �87 and 1993).

Yrene won a Tournament Series event at The Phoenician and finished in second place at the SWSPGA Professional Championship at The Pine Canyon Club in Flagstaff. He also tied for ninth at the SWSPGA Section Championship at Paradise Valley CC. On the national scene, Yrene tied for eighth place at the PGA Professional National Championship in upstate New York and of course, his solid performance at the 2006 PGA Championship.

�Walking around the clubhouse at Medinah and then playing all four rounds of a major championship was just so thrilling for me,� said Yrene who has made one cut at the FBR Open and played all four rounds in two Tucson Opens.

�I played with Brad Faxon the first two rounds at the PGA Championship and he couldn�t have been nicer to me. From start to finish, it was one of the great highlights of my life.�
